Portfolio Director, Program Related Investments (PRI), The Colorado Health Foundation

As the Portfolio Director of Program Related Investments since April 2017, Dr. Bynum develops the Colorado Health Foundation’s impact investing strategy and manages the Foundation’s $60 million impact investment portfolio, including its nonprofit and for-profit program-related investments. Prior to joining the Foundation, Dr. Bynum helped launch a $100 million nonprofit community development financial institution (CDFI) to help support healthcare services and good jobs in communities of need. Ben’s commitment to education and health is long-standing. Dr. Bynum is a former member of the national School-Based Health Alliance’s Board of Directors and is a published author in the Journal of Health Care Finance analyzing the intersection of school-based health centers and Medicaid alternative payment models. He currently serves on the board of directors for Colorado Access, a nonprofit health plan serving roughly half a million low-income Coloradans, and Grounded Solutions Network, a national nonprofit that builds strong communities by promoting housing solutions that stay affordable for generations. Since making Denver his home, Dr. Bynum has created and co-teaches a core health equity course at the Colorado School of Public Health entitled, “Health Equity in Colorado’s Safety Net,” focused on innovation, affordable housing, economic security and health services. Dr. Bynum received his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. and completed a dual Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) and Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) at Columbia University in the City of New York as a W.E.B. Du Bois Scholar.
