Senior Director, Quality and Value Based Care, University of Maryland Medical Center

Karen Marie Wilding is the Senior Director of Quality & Value-based Care with the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS).

Karen is responsible for driving value-based care efforts across the acute and ambulatory care settings. She works with commercial and government payers, facilitating work streams and process improvement efforts for a growing 2.5B in accountable care for the system. Under her leadership, the UMMS organization has seen year over year shared savings achievement and top-quality performance.

In addition to her system-wide responsibilities, she leads major operating divisions for both the University of Maryland Quality Care Network (UMQCN) and UM Transform Health MD (Care Transformation Organization), within the organization's clinically integrated network (CIN). Karen's team provides statewide support to clinicians and healthcare entities in the areas of quality, practice transformation, risk adjustment, health IT, data & analytics, compliance, and federal policy programs. These startups have witnessed multi-millions in new revenue generation in the first three years.

She was previously the Director of Operations for the Information & Technology Department at UMMS and has worked in health information technology for small and large organizations. She has completed numerous implementations, adding to her experience within all aspects of healthcare technology across the care continuum. Karen began her healthcare career as an EMT working in acute care in a rural health system in Maine and has worked in clinical research.

Karen holds a board certification as a Certified Healthcare Chief Information Officer (CHCIO) with the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME). In spring 2018, she was inducted as a Fellow of the Health Information Management Systems Society (FHIMSS). She has a Professional Certification in Health Information Management (CPHIMS) from HIMSS. She is the immediate Past-President of the Maryland Chapter of HIMSS, one of the largest chapters under the global organization. Karen has held an adjunct faculty appointment with the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) in the Health Information Technology Program since 2010.

She attended George Washington University in Washington D.C and held a master's certificate in Value-based Care from The Johns Hopkins University and Normandale CC. She resides near Annapolis with her family.
